This study uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze structural brain changes in the DE50-MD dog model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The results reveal significant reductions in gray matter volume, particularly in regions associated with cognitive and motor functions.
The findings suggest that DMD affects not only skeletal muscles but also neural integrity. These changes in gray matter may underlie the cognitive impairments observed in patients with DMD.
The study underscores the importance of considering brain involvement in DMD pathophysiology and suggests MRI as a valuable tool for monitoring disease progression and potential therapeutic outcomes.
